Recent analysis has revealed that Russian-language darknet markets have maintained their grip on the illicit drug trade, particularly in the realm of cryptocurrency sales. Here’s a closer look at the latest developments.

Russian-language Darknet Markets Dominate Bitcoin and TRON Drug Sales

Russian-language darknet markets have been the main drivers of illicit drug sales, accounting for over 97% of overall revenue in Bitcoin (BTC) and TRON (TRX). While Western darknet markets faltered, Russian platforms dominated the sales. Darknet marketplaces saw a slight revenue bump in 2024, bringing in over $1.7 billion, with Russian-language platforms still leading the way in crypto drug sales, according to analysts at blockchain forensic firm TRM Labs. In their latest 2025 Crypto Crime Report, the analysts pointed out that despite the many challenges faced by darknet marketplaces in 2024, these platforms have seen a slight increase in income compared to 2023.
